Archaeologists in northern Peru announced an unprecedented archaeological discovery. Researchers unearthed a monumental funerary platform that remained virtually untouched for over 600 years. The intact intact Chimú elite tomb contained the skeletal remains of 38 high-status individuals. The excavation took place within the Utzh An walled complex, formerly known as the Gran Chimú Palace, inside the UNESCO World Heritage site of Chan Chan in Trujillo.

Rare Funerary Platform Escapes Centuries of Looting

Most monumental pre-Inca burials on Peru’s northern coast suffered heavy looting across centuries. In contrast, this platform preserved all burial contents in their original context. Archaeologists from the Chan Chan Archaeological Complex Special Project (PECACH) recovered complete funeral bundles, personal ornaments, metal emblems, and historic weaponry alongside the deceased.

Eighteen bodies lay in the main platform section. Another twenty individuals rested within two adjacent lateral chambers. The extraordinary state of preservation provides researchers with an undisturbed view into the funeral rituals, wealth distribution, and social organization of the Chimú empire prior to Inca subjugation.

Singular Burial Points to Paramount Ruler

Preliminary examinations revealed a distinct anomaly among the remains. One individual was buried in an extended posture, completely separate from the other bodies. This position contrasts sharply with standard Chimú burial traditions, which typically placed the dead in seated flexed positions.

Experts hypothesize the tomb was built to honor this paramount figure. The surrounding individuals may represent sacrificial companions or attendants interred during funerary rites. Field teams continue analyzing physical evidence to determine causes of death and exact kinship lines. This discovery stands alongside other recent Peruvian heritage finds, highlighting the profound depth of pre-Columbian civilizations across the country.
