The Holy See confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will travel to South America for his first apostolic journey. Even though the Pontiff was born in the United States, he holds Peruvian nationality and lived in Chiclayo for 8 years performing pastoral work.
President Keiko Fujimori will welcome him at the Government Palace for a private meeting. Later, authorities will host a massive thanksgiving mass at the Las Palmas Air Base, giving locals a chance to see him in person.

The last time a Pope arrived in the country was in 2018. Back then, the event mobilized 1,500,000 travelers across the territory. Chiclayo and Cusco Prepare for the Crowds
Chiclayo expects to be the main beneficiary due to its close history with the Pope. The northern city anticipates the arrival of 1,500,000 followers, who will gather at the Pampas de Reque. Since the local hotel capacity only covers 60,000 beds, residents are actively preparing at least 2,000 available rooms in private homes to accommodate the massive influx of people.
Cusco plans to host the central gathering at the Sacsayhuaman esplanade. The Andean city expects 50,000 specific arrivals for the papal events. This massive arrival of domestic and international visitors provides great relief for local tourism operators, as November marks the beginning of the low travel season, which usually only sees between 110,000 and 115,000 monthly arrivals. Local authorities are currently coordinating with the archbishopric to adapt 6 specific tourist locations for religious activities during his stay in the mountains.
