Waynapicchu Mountain Reopens to Tourists Following Intensive Conservation Work

CUSCO, Peru — The official Waynapicchu reopening 2026 took effect on July 1, allowing public access to the mountain trail at the start of the peak travel season. Consequently, this schedule coordinates directly with the arrival of international hikers in the region. This decision follows a month of specialized maintenance tasks executed by regional conservation experts.

Technical teams from the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park conducted structural repairs along Route 3-A of Circuit 3, which is also recognized as the Royalty Circuit. Specifically, the field intervention covered the entire path from the control booth to the mountain summit. This work was necessary to secure the ancient stone structures and improve trail safety.

Maintenance Work Completed for the Trail Launch

The field crews executed multiple technical tasks to ensure structural stabilization before the tourist launch. For example, specialized builders stabilized pre-Hispanic staircases and reinforced historic retaining walls. Therefore, the structural integrity of the trail remains secure against heavy foot traffic.

Additionally, the conservation workers cleared roots, moss, and dense overgrowth that risked displacing original masonry. Heavy rain regularly impacts these structures, so field crews cleaned out the ancient water drainage systems to prevent erosion. Finally, staff added new support ladders and steel-cable handrails along the steepest sections of the climb to reduce visitor risk.

Maritza Rosa Candia, Executive Director of the Cusco Cultural Directorate, API explained that these regular maintenance operations protect the archaeological site. Simultaneously, these actions provide a reliable experience for hikers. Because these tasks are finished, all three trails within Circuit 3 are fully operational.

Consequently, visitors can select from these restored mountain routes:

1. Waynapicchu Mountain Route: The main path leading up to the summit.
2. The Great Cavern Route: The specialized trail connecting to the historical Temple of the Moon.
3. Huchu’ypicchu Mountain Route: The shorter, adjacent climb located next to the main peak control checkpoint.
