Gran Pajaten Chachapoya structures: 100 New Ruins Discovered

The World Monuments Fund announced a massive archaeological breakthrough in Peru. Experts mapped over 100 hidden Gran Pajaten Chachapoya structures. This discovery occurs inside the Río Abiseo National Park. It represents the biggest find in this region since the 1980s. These ruins multiply the known size of the ancient settlement.

Uncovering the Gran Pajaten Chachapoya structures

The Chachapoya thrived on the eastern Peruvian Andes slopes. They lived between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level. Their civilization lasted from the 7th until the 16th century. Historians call them the “people of the cloud forest.” The Río Abiseo park holds a UNESCO Mixed World Heritage status. Explorers in the 1960s only documented 26 ceremonial buildings. Those initial ruins featured stone mosaics of humans and high-relief friezes. Dense jungle growth concealed the remaining ruins for decades.

LiDAR Scanning Reveals Hidden Ruins

A recent project ran from 2022 to 2024. Specialists combined remote sensing technology with traditional archaeological methods. The team deployed aerial and ground LiDAR equipment. They added photogrammetry and topographical mapping to their process. This non-invasive strategy protected the fragile ecosystem completely. Their delicate approach successfully exposed the new ruins under the heavy foliage.

WMF Efforts and Future History

Juan Pablo de la Puente Brunke leads WMF Peru. He stated this evidence transforms our view of the ancient site. The ruins form an articulated network of pre-Hispanic settlements. Experts actively removed thick vegetation to protect the structures. They stabilized ancient stairs and stone reliefs. Teams also rebuilt sections of the outer perimeter wall. This project yielded the most accurate site map ever created.

The Inca empire ended the Chachapoya independence during the late 15th century. However, this society demonstrated remarkable environmental adaptability for over 1,000 years. Their long-distance cultural connections left a deep regional footprint. Archaeologists believe the jungle hides even more historical secrets.
