Recommendations

You deserve to witness the legendary turquoise waters of Peru's most famous glacier lagoon without feeling physically depleted, gasping for breath, or unprepared for the cold mountain winds. Planning your warm clothing layers, keeping your body fully hydrated, and understanding the natural rhythm of this high-altitude path ensures you protect your breathing, remain completely insulated against sub-zero mountain temperatures, and enjoy the summit in absolute physical comfort.

  • Acclimatize in Cusco for a minimum of 24 to 48 hours before your scheduled departure to allow your cardiovascular system to adapt safely to the lake elevation of 4,200 meters (13,780 feet).
  • Wear sturdy, broken-in trail shoes or hiking boots with thick rubber lugs to prevent slipping on the steep, sometimes muddy or loose gravel paths.
  • Dress in smart winter layers—including a thermal base shirt, a heavy fleece sweater, and a windproof insulated jacket—to stay completely warm against the brisk alpine breezes.
  • Pack a lightweight rain poncho at the very top of your bag, as high-altitude weather can switch from bright sun to cold rain showers in a matter of minutes.
  • Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and wear secure polarized sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from the exceptionally high UV radiation reflecting off the snow-covered slopes.
  • Bring professional trekking poles with rubber protective tips to absorb gravity and protect your knee joints during the steep uphill climb and descent.
  • Carry small cash bills in Peruvian Soles (PEN) to easily hire local horse handlers or pay for rustic restrooms along the mountain trail.
  • Keep your camera and phone batteries warm inside an inner pocket close to your chest, as cold mountain air drains electronic charges twice as fast as normal.
  • Drink plenty of water and local coca tea the day before your departure to keep your circulatory system hydrated and naturally stave off altitude pressure.
  • Enjoy a light, low-fat dinner the night before your trek, ensuring your body digests food easily without wasting precious oxygen resources.
