The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) published two new global rankings today. These reports measure direct tourism contributions to the gross domestic product (GDP). They also track leisure travel spending worldwide. WTTC President Gloria Guevara presented these crucial statistics during a recent virtual conference. The reports specifically highlight the massive WTTC Peru tourism potential for the upcoming seasons.

Global Leaders and Local Revenue Forecasts

The United States led the GDP contribution ranking in 2025. The American tourism sector generated $885.8 billion. China followed closely with $434.8 billion. Germany and Mexico secured the third and fourth spots, respectively. The United States also dominated the leisure spending category worldwide.

Guevara emphasized a highly positive WTTC Peru tourism outlook. She projects that local sector revenues will reach $25.8 billion this year. She advised Peruvian authorities to continuously improve traditional travel destinations. She also recommended developing entirely new travel products to maintain this economic momentum.

Global Job Creation and Regional Visas

The global travel industry outpaced general economic growth significantly in 2025. The worldwide economy grew by only 2.8%. Meanwhile, the global tourism sector expanded by a remarkable 4.1%. This dynamic industry supported 366 million jobs globally last year. It actively created one out of every three new jobs worldwide.

Guevara also addressed regional market competition. She explained that Latin American nations compete against large geographic blocks, not neighboring countries. She strongly suggested implementing a unified regional visa system. This unified strategy works exceptionally well across Europe and Asia. A regional visa would allow international tourists to cross South American borders seamlessly.
