Northern Peru Gears Up for the 2026 Whale Watching Season This July

PROMPERÚ has officially kicked off its “2026 Whale Watching Season” campaign, aiming to drive domestic travel and showcase northern Peru as a premier eco-tourism destination in South America. The initiative highlights the regions of Piura and Tumbes as humpback whales make their annual journey to the Peruvian coast.

From July through October, these massive cetaceans migrate thousands of miles from freezing Antarctic waters to the warmer north of Peru to mate and give birth. This spectacular migration makes the beaches of Piura and Tumbes some of the best spots in the South Pacific for eco-friendly whale watching.

Top beach towns like Los Órganos, El Ñuro, Máncora, Cabo Blanco, Lobitos, Punta Sal, Zorritos, and Cancas provide perfect viewing conditions. Beyond whale watching, visitors can dive into a variety of local experiences, from outdoor adventures and nature tours to the region’s famous gastronomy and rich culture.

The Big Picture: Through this initiative, PROMPERÚ aims to boost northern travel while championing sustainable tourism. The goal is twofold: protect local marine life and stimulate the economy of coastal communities that rely on eco-tourism.

The official launch brought together key leaders, including Vice Minister of Tourism Aracelly Laca, PROMPERÚ’s Tourism Promotion Director María del Sol Velásquez, and Acting Governor of Tumbes Rosario Palacios de De Lama, alongside local authorities and Aldo Durant, president of the Northern Beaches Management Body.

A Taste of the Ocean: The Launch Event

To celebrate the kickoff, guests were treated to an immersive exhibition mimicking Peru’s northern marine ecosystem. Using 360-degree projections, underwater audio, and interactive displays, attendees got a closer look at the migration patterns and lives of humpback whales.

The event also featured live artistic performances and a food tasting that spotlighted the culinary heritage of Piura and Tumbes, highlighting the tight bond between regional identity and tourism.

Ultimately, PROMPERÚ (under the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism – Mincetur) is inviting travelers to embark on an unforgettable journey. It’s an opportunity that blends adventure and education with environmental respect, all while supporting local communities and sustainable travel across Peru.
