Peru Uses Outdoor Sports to Grow Global Tourism Presence

Peru is using outdoor sports to grow its travel sector. The national tourism board, Promperú, is focusing its efforts on the Áncash region by supporting the 2026 Ultra Trail Cordillera Blanca (UTCB). This international running race, taking place from July 2 to July 5, serves as a major showcase for the area’s massive mountains, cold glaciers, and clear blue lakes. This initiative is a core part of developing Peru adventure tourism on a global scale.

The race officially operates under the “Marca Perú” country brand, which helps build trust with international travelers. This year, the event has attracted around 1,200 runners from various countries. To make the competition highly accessible, organizers created different course lengths. This allows both beginner runners and experienced ultramarathon racers to participate in the same event.

Global Promotion Through Elite Athletes

To reach a wider audience online, the tourism board invited seven well-known athletes and digital content creators from the United States, Canada, Brazil, France, and Spain. These guests are traveling through the region and sharing their daily outdoor activities with their social media followers. Among the invited runners is Claudia Corral, a top competitor who recently won a major mountain racing championship in Spain. This creator campaign is designed to boost Peru adventure tourism by showing real, unedited experiences to global audiences.

Environmental Care and Local Impact

Beyond the physical challenge of the race, the organizers emphasize environmental care and working closely with local towns. This focus on responsible travel aligns with the region’s growing international reputation. In fact, Forbes recently named Áncash one of the best adventure locations to visit in 2026. This recognition shows that the area is ready for sustainable growth.

This strategy targets a highly profitable segment of the global travel market. Research from the Adventure Travel Trade Association shows that outdoor sports tourists generally stay longer and spend more money than standard vacationers. This behavior provides direct economic benefits to the local communities that host them. By supporting these high-profile sports events, the country aims to establish Peru adventure tourism as a premier, sustainable choice for global travelers while boosting local economies.
