Cusco Celebrates Inti Raymi with Massive Historical Reenactment

The traditional Inti Raymi 2026 celebration drew thousands of spectators across three historic stages. This staging marked the high point of Cusco’s jubilee month. Consequently, more than 1,200 performers participated in the event. This large group included military personnel, students, and local arts groups. Together, they recreated the peak of the Inca Empire under clear skies.

Rituals at Qorikancha and Hawkaypata

The event started with an official greeting to the sun at the Qorikancha esplanade. Afterward, the royal procession marched to the main square, known as Hawkaypata. Here, teacher David Ancca Cuyo portrayed Inca Pachacutec. He climbed the ceremonial altar to perform two traditional ceremonies:

• Coca Leaf Reading: Andean priests examined the sacred leaves. Therefore, they declared a positive forecast for the region based on the bright texture and sweet taste.
• The Meeting of Two Worlds: The Inca met with the provincial mayor, Luis Pantoja Calvo. Next, he handed over the administrative quipu. This act was symbolic of governance, so he called for regional unity.

The Main Event at Sacsayhuamán

After 2:00 PM, the celebration moved to the Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park. The large open fields held nearly 4,000 tourists in grandstands. Meanwhile, an estimated 50,000 additional onlookers gathered on the surrounding hillsides.

This venue hosted the core religious rituals. For example, actors blessed the chicha de jora and shared the sankhu. They also lit the new fire. However, the most striking moment was the simulated sacrifice of a llama. Actors reenacted reading the animal’s organs to predict the future.

Logistics and Final Review

The organization reported minor, temporary issues with the sound system. Additionally, security personnel handled isolated incidents with tourists. These visitors crossed safety lines to take photos. Despite these minor issues, the overall event ran smoothly.

Finally, the celebration ended with words from the Inca and the Coya. This presentation concluded Cusco’s main festive month. Thus, it showcased the region’s cultural heritage and active tourism industry.
