Floating Islands of Uros Tour, we’ll take a short boat ride from Puno to the grouping of about 50 man-made islands on Lake Titicaca, where life happens on the water for their inhabitants. See how the residents of the Uros use the totora reed, an aquatic plant that grows in the lake, to build and maintain their islands, as well as for building family huts, cooking, and to bargain for other goods in the Puno markets. This civilization appeared over 3000 years ago and traditionally spoke the now-extinct Uro Puquina language; Today the population speaks Aymara. Among this island community, you’ll find a garden, primary school, medical center and church that serve the more than 1000 residents. You’ll also see the elaborately-woven, traditional reed boats used by the locals for fishing and transportation to the mainland and from island to island.
