The spectacular Lares trek is perfect for travelers looking for an “off-the-beaten-path” adventure in a region of Peru that remains relatively unchanged over the last 500 years. This remote and rarely visited region offers the traveler a unique insight into the lives of Andean villagers, often dressed in their traditional brightly-colored ponchos. As you follow the trail through the picturesque Lares Valley, you’ll have the opportunity to see stone houses with straw-thatched roofs surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas, while inside the houses you’ll see guinea pigs running loose. The trek itself is rated at moderate difficulty, similar to the Inca Trail. There are, however, two passes over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), so it’s important to be acclimated before starting the trek. After the trek ends in Ollantaytambo, you’ll take the short train ride to Aguas Calientes to visit the mysterious Machu Picchu citadel, one of the Seven New World Wonders. The Lares trek to Machu Picchu is a spectacular way to see Peru’s unique landscapes.
After breakfast, you’ll be picked up at your hotel in Cusco to begin a scenic drive into the renowned Sacred Valley. You’ll pass through the quaint villages of Pisac and Calca, both of historic importance during Inca times. The route then ascends into the mountains toward the lovely town of Lares, known for its hot springs.
Enjoy lunch in Lares before beginning your first day of trekking to reach the mountain town of Huacahuasi, where our first campsite awaits.
After an early morning breakfast, we’ll start out with a hike upwards through the idyllic Lares Valley, continuing up through small passes until we reach the highest pass of the Lares trek, Ipsayccasa pass, located at a dizzying height of 14,600 ft (4,450 meters). Once you’ve had your fill of these views, you’ll start your descent into the town of Patacancha.
The trail passes through several different weaving communities. You’ll learn about the local lifestyle, and have time to take a look at their exquisite handicrafts.
From Patacancha, we’ll take a 30-minute ride by local bus to Huallata, where we’ll continue walking another 45 minutes to the Pumamarka campsite.
We’ll enjoy one last early-morning breakfast on the trail before we head out and visit the archeological site of Pumamarka, or “Puma Town.” We’ll descend through a scenic valley, taking time to appreciate the surrounding snow-capped mountains.
By afternoon, we’ll reach the town of Ollantaytambo in the heart of fertile Sacred Valley, where we’ll spend some time exploring the town’s impressive archeological site. In the evening, we’ll take the train to Aguas Calientes, the town nearest to Machu Picchu, where you’ll have the evening to spend at your leisure.
We’ll get an early start this morning to head to the bus stop for a 20-minute drive to the ruins of the famed Machu Picchu, hidden in the misty, green mountains above. Once there, you’ll be guided through the site by one of our experts, explaining the details and significance behind this mysterious structure. These intricately placed giant stones were hauled to the top of the site and carefully positioned many centuries ago, and the foundation of these temples, buildings, and walls still remain strong.
After your local expert guides you through Machu Picchu, wander one of the many original trails leading from the main site, or head into town for a late lunch. We’ll return to the station in the mid-afternoon to take the train back to Cusco and transfer back to your hotel.
OPTIONAL: Hike the famed Huayna Picchu, the iconic peak overlooking the Machu Picchu ruins. This hike is steep and takes about 3 hours round trip, but the views are undoubtedly worthwhile. Please let us know if you’d like to add this to your itinerary.
