We’ll kick off our first day of this trek heading out from your hotel towards the mysterious ruins of Tambomachay, then on up to a mountain pass at an altitude of 4200 meters above sea level (13,780 ft). The beginning of the trek will be on level terrain, and the landscape will be that of typical Andean valleys rich in corn, potatoes, barley, quinoa and other Andean tubers. We’ll head down into valley and through the village below. As we descend along the trail you’ll see a beautifully green valley stretching into the horizon. Passing through the village and across a bridge, the trail takes us up over a second mountain pass at around 4300 meters (14,110 ft) into high sierra landscapes, where we’ll have views of Lake Qoricocha (“Golden Lake” in Quechua). We continue along this wide-open path, arriving at the highest point of the trek at 4350 meters (14,270 ft). After descending into the community of Pucamarca, we’ll set up camp for the night and enjoy dinner before getting some sleep.
Just below the village, the valley narrows to form a ravine where an Inca staircase leads us down to the spectacular citadel of Huchuy Qosqo. Huchuy Qosqo is perched above the Urubamba Valley overlooking the little town of Lamay. It was once an administrative center for the Incas, with several structures boasting the famous Inca-style masonry. In the hillsides you’ll see ancient granaries as it was also an important agricultural center. Among the site’s Inca constructions are a large “kallanka” (rectangular Hall) and some residential and defensive quarters. Continuing along this picturesque path with Mount Pitusiray looming over us from across the valley, we’ll eventually pass through an Inca gateway made of stone and adobe. This was the entrance to Huchuy Qosqo for travelers who climbed up from the Urubamba Valley. After our exploration of Huchuyqosqo, we’ll continue our descent into Lamay, where our private transportation will be waiting to take us to Ollantaytambo. After a scenic train ride into the mountain town of Aguas Calientes, we’ll settle into our hotel and have a chance to take advantage of the hot springs after which the town was named.
Today is the day we’ve been waiting for! We’ll ride before dawn to catch the earliest bus from town to Machu Picchu, and take advantage of these wee hours of the morning when there are fewer visitors. Explore the labyrinth of pathways and soak up the mystical energy of this famed Inca masterpiece with your guide. Afterwards, you’ll have the option to explore on your own, or even hike the famous Huayna Picchu Mountain which serves as a backdrop to the ruins. (This hike requires a permit, so let us know if you’d like the option.)
Our lunch will be on your own in Aguas Calientes, and you’ll have time to explore this cozy, mountain town before catching an afternoon train to Poroy. From here, our transportation will pick us up and take you to your hotel in Cusco, where you’ll have the evening to spend out on the town and wind down from your adventure!
