Additional Information

Before heading to famed Machu Picchu, get off the beaten path and see the lesser-known but equally beautiful Huchuy Qosqo, an ancient pre-Incan and Incan settlement perched precariously on the steep slopes of the Peruvian Andes. Huchuy Qosqo is a culturally significant archeological site from the Inca civilization, high above the Sacred Valley in a strategic location hidden from enemies to keep the empire secure; an excellent example of the ingenious war strategies used by the Incas.

Visit the Inca ruins of Huchuy Qosqo, then take the train to Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Huchuy Qosqo

This morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and head up to the outskirts of Cusco, where we’ll meet our new travel companions, the horses. We’ll begin our morning ride through the mountains, arriving at one of the largest lakes in the highlands region known as Asnac Qocha. Here, we’ll enjoy the mountain views and relax before we get back on the move. After about two hours, we’ll make our way to a small, Qechuan community where we’ll say goodbye to our horses and start a 40-minute downhill hike to reach the spectacular ruins of Huchuy Qosqo. Here, we’ll explore the site and learn more about its history and archeology. From here, we’ll hike down into the town of Lamay where our driver will be waiting to take us to the Ollantaytambo train station. We’ll catch the evening train to arrive at Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu Town) where we’ll settle into our hotel and get a good night’s rest before tomorrow’s much-anticipated adventure.

Day 2Machu Picchu

You’ll have the rest of the day to explore Machu Picchu as you wish, including an optional hike up the famous Wayna Picchu Mountain, or Machu Picchu mountain for the most spectacular views. (These hikes require an additional pass, so let us know if you’re interested in this option.) We’ll head back into town in the afternoon to catch our train back to Ollantaytambo, then onto your hotel in Cusco.
