Additional Information

This is an adventure that combines archaeology, nature and some stellar mountain scenery on one of Peru’s lesser-known routes. (One of our own personal favorites.) We’ll lead you to the last refuge of the Incas, perched high above the Apurimac Canyon. Choquequirao, which means “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua, is a remote and mysterious archaeological complex which holds incredibly well-preserved Inca archaeological remains.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Cachora – Playa Rosalina on the Apurimac River

Today, we’ll head out early to begin a 5-hour drive to the mountain town of Cachora, a journey with non-stop views of of Salkantay, Humantay, Pitusiray, Chicon and Veronica mountains. Along the way descend into the town of Limatambo where we’ll find the Inca site, Tarawasi, then on to the small village of Cora Wasi, where we will have a chance to see the Saiwite Stone, which is said to be a carved map of the Inca Empire.
Upon our arrival to Cachora at 2,915m (9,565 ft), we’ll have late breakfast, meet our porters and arrange our equipment on the mules and horses. With only our day-packs, we’ll start hiking along the edge of the mountains towards Capulliyoc, where we’ll get our first views of the Apurimac Canyon, as well a glimpse the long trail that lies ahead. As we begin our descent towards Coca Masana, the climate will become noticeably warmer and the flora and fauna will become more representative of a sub-tropical region. We’ll eventually arrive at Playa Rosalina at 1,550m (5,085 ft) on the powerful Apurimac River, where camp will be set up for the night.

Day 2Playa Rosalina – Choquequirao (3,035m or 9,960 ft)

After an early morning breakfast, today’s trek begins by crossing the mighty Apurimac River by footbridge. A challenging, 5-hour climb lies ahead of us before finally reaching Marampampa alongside the Chunchulmayo River. We’ll stop here to take a much-needed break and enjoy our lunch.
The afternoon hike is not as demanding as the morning climb, and along the way we’ll observe a range of gorgeous orchids and wildflowers, as well as a great variety of Andean birds. After another 2 hours of walking, we’ll arrive at the immense archaeological site of Choquequirao, celebrating with exceptional sunset views and condors flying overhead (with a bit of luck!). We’ll set up camp just outside of the ruins in the nearby cloud forest.

Day 3Choquequirao – Raqaypampa

We’ll spend the morning visiting the vast central complex of Choquequirao. Our guide will take some time to explain the history and importance of the site, which is still being renovated. After exploring the sacred Inka Site for a while, we will have our lunch before continuing on our journey back, descending down the mountain for about 2 hours to Raqaypampa, where we will set up our camp for the evening and enjoy dinner and a hot drink.

Day 4Raqaypampa – Cachora – Cusco

This morning after breakfast, we’ll continue our descent all the way down to the Apurimac River, where we’ll stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll continue for another 3 hours along a lush, beautiful route to Coca Masana, where we will be able to take a short break and have a snack before continuing on to Capulliyoc, where we started our adventure only a few days before. This is where will say good-bye to our wranglers and load up on our private bus back to Cusco. After the best hot shower of your life at the hotel, it’s finally time to enjoy a much-deserved beer and a good meal with friends!
