The Colla people of the Puno region developed their powerful civilization on the banks of Lake Titicaca, and their most emblematic and well-preserved relics left behind are the circular funerary towers of Sillustani, overlooking Umayo Lake in the altiplano region north of Puno. Witness these complex, stone structures and have a deeper understanding of their beliefs and traditions.
Sillustani Tombs Towers we´ll travel away from the city to the highlands of Puno and explore the land of the Colla people, a pre-Incan civilization which was later incorporated into the Inca empire. The SIllistani towers stand on a windy hill overlooking the blue waters of Umayo Lake, and were built by the Collas to bury families of nobility. These cylindrical towers or “chullpas” are as tall as 12 meters in height and boast a complex, architectural design which rivals that of the Incas. The openings of the towers face towards the east, where Pachamama or “Mother Earth” is reborn each day. The graves have been pillaged by tomb raiders in the past, but plenty of artifacts and human remains have been recovered from the site, giving researchers more insight into the traditions and customs of the Colla civilization. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside on our way back to town.
An incredible visit to the towers of Sillustani.
