Galapagos giant tortoises were nearly extinct in the 19th century due to illegal hunting but today, there are extensive conservation efforts being made to save the remaining population of tortoises.

Almost every bird in the Galapagos has been spotted on Santa Cruz which makes the highlands the perfect spot for bird watching.
