Additional Information

Inca Jungle Bike and Hike was created with the most adventurous spirits in mind. This is our ‘revamped’ Inca Trail, but with the same pay off at the end: The glorious Lost City of the Incas. Our alternative trek to Machu Picchu takes us through stunning landscapes spanning the rugged terrain of the high Andes and the jungle of the lower cloud forests.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Santa María (optional by bike)

Today, we’ll hit the road early into the rolling hills and snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota Mountains to the village of Santa Maria at 1,430 ft. Based on your group’s preference and the weather conditions, we offer the option to leave the van behind and continue the journey on our new Scott cross-country mountain bikes at Abra de Malaga Pass. The exhilarating three to four-hour downhill ride makes all the difference!
Once we arrive to Santa Teresa in the evening, we’ll have some free time to relax or explore before having dinner and calling it a night.

Day 2Santa María – Santa Teresa

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll set out on foot into the lush terrain of the cloud forest, where you’ll begin to see a noticeable change in the flora and fauna – and the surroundings are spectacular. Along the way, we’ll have a chance to visit a local coca plantation, and at the highest point of the trail, we’ll come across an old Inca path, long out of use.
When we arrive to Santa Teresa, we can soothe our tired muscles in the mineral-rich waters of the natural hot springs in town before dinner and a much-needed night’s rest.

Day 3Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes

Today, we’ll set out even deeper into the jungle surroundings of the cloud forest – now closer than ever to the “Lost City of the Incas”. We’ll cover some distance over the course of five or six hours on the road leading to a hydro-electric power plant, where the nearby ceremonial site of Inti Huatana awaits. From here, we’ll finish an enjoyable two to three-hour stretch, walking along the railroad tracks to the cozy, mountain town of Aguas Calientes. Tonight, we’ll relax together over dinner before getting an early-night’s rest in preparation for what’s to come tomorrow.

Day 4Machu Picchu

Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for! We’ll get ahead of the masses and set out while the rest of the town is fast asleep, hiking up the trail to Machu Picchu to reach our destination by sunrise. You’ll explore the ruins and learn about the history of this mysterious construction with your local expert.
Afterwards, you’ll have some free time to soak up the renowned energy of Machu Picchu and explore the surroundings on your own. If climbing the famed Huayna Picchu Mountain is on your bucket list, let us know ahead of time and we’ll ensure you get your passes, as these are extremely limited, especially during the busier seasons. We at Qosqo Expeditions always recommend this option, as long as you’re fit and able! The steep trail isn’t for the faint of heart, so let us know if you have any concerns. In the afternoon, we’ll head back to Aguas Calientes to catch the train to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, then on to Cusco.
