Itinerary

Day 1Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu

Early this morning, we’ll catch a train for a 4-hour, scenic ride through the dramatic, Andean landscape to kilometer 104, where we’ll pick up the trail. We’ll walk about 4 hours up to an impressive Inca site called Wiñay Wayna “Forever Young” at 2680 meters (8792 ft), continuing on to Inti Punku “Sun gate” at 2730 meters (8792 ft) from where you’ll have your first glimpse of the famed Machu Picchu site from above. We’ll descend into the ruins and explore the labyrinth of passageways, uncovering the mysteries of the site. In the afternoon, we’ll head into the nearby mountain town of Aguas Calientes for dinner and some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Day 2Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu

We’ll start the day with a gradual hike up in elevation towards the archeological site of Llulluchapampa, above the timberline. After lunch, we’ll power up the trail to reach Warmiwañuska Pass, the summit of our hike at 14,000 ft. After celebrating our victorious arrival to the highest point on the trek, we’ll continue on down to our lunch stop. After a little break, we will continue on to the evening’s campsite at Pacaymayo, our favorite spot on the trail to stargaze and learn more about Inca “cosmovision”.
