Suggestions

Along with sufficient clothing for two days, we recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for protection from the sun, a jacket for the cooler temperatures in the evening and comfortable walking shoes. Bring some local currency for any last-minute items you might pick up along the way. Of course, don’t forget your camera!

Additional Information

Experience the local communities on the floating islands of Uros who have called Lake Titicaca their home for centuries. The Uros culture pre-dates that of the Incas, and their position on the water helped to isolate them from the more aggressive Inca and Colla civilizations. Learn how the locals have sustained themselves over the years and maintained their traditional and relatively simple way of life.

Itinerary

Day 1Visit to Uros Floating Islands & Amantani Community

Early this morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to head to the harbor. We’ll set out by boat and cross the waters of Lake Titicaca to the Uros Floating Islands, a small community that has lived on these reed islands for decades. See how the residents of the Uros use the totora reed, an aquatic plant that grows in the lake to build and maintain their islands, as well as for building family huts, cooking, and to bargain for products such as quinoa, potatoes, barley and wool.
You’ll also see the elaborately-woven, traditional reed boats used by the locals for fishing and transportation to the mainland and from island to island. Take some time to explore some of these islands on-foot.
Afterwards, we’ll continue by boat towards “Amantani Island”. Enjoy the warm welcome from the locals as we pull into the harbor, where you’ll meet your host family. This afternoon, we’ll walk up to the highest point of the island to a mountain called “Pachamama” by the locals and check out some ancient ruins. Enjoy the view of Lake Titicaca from this perfect vantage point as the sun sets for the evening. Soon after nightfall, we head back down to the main plaza where our host families will invite us to dinner in their home.
After your meal, head out “on-the-town” to tonight’s main event: a party hosted by the locals at the folkloric saloon, complete with a local band. Before you go, your hosts will help you get all dressed up in traditional clothing. Once the night winds down, you’ll head back to your host’s home for a good night’s rest.

Day 2Taquile Islands – Back to Puno

After breakfast, we´ll say our goodbyes to our new friends of Amantani Island and head back out on the boat towards “Taquile Island”, a traditional Quechua-speaking community known for its agricultural terraces and local weaving community. Once we reach the island, you’ll have the opportunity to walk and take in the spectacular views of the lake.
After some free time for exploration on-your-own, meet back with the rest of the group for lunch at a local restaurant. We’ll finish our day’s adventure contemplating the shimmering, blue waters of Lake Titicaca from our boat en route back to the Puno harbor, and on to your hotel.

The mesmerizing azure waters coupled with the cordial hospitality of the local communities made this trip incredibly memorable. Our guide’s wealth of knowledge about the history, culture, and folklore associated with the lake was truly enlightening. The visit to the Uros floating islands and a homestay on Amantani island were unique experiences that enriched our understanding of life on the lake.
