Guided visit to the Sanctuary of Pachacamac.
Lima Hotel Transfer
09:00 am
Today, archaeologists and historians are still solving mysteries and uncovering new information about Peru’s ancient civilizations. Pachacamac, located south of the city of Lima, was a sacred site visited many ancient Andean cultures for over 2000 years. We’ll see museums with pieces on display that were found during the excavations, artifacts similar to ones which are still regularly being found on site and in the surrounding areas.
In the morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and head about 30 km (19 miles) south of the city. Your guide will give you a background into the history of Lima. After a 40-minute drive, we’ll arrive at the ruins of Pachacamac. To better understand the importance of this archaeological site, we’ll first visit the Pachacamac Museum at the entrance of the ruins. Here you’ll see several ancient relics found at the site during archaeological excavations. Among the artifacts, we’ll see decorated ceramics, textiles, and carved wooden figures representing the god Pachacamac.
Afterwards, we’ll leave the museum and explore the site. While on our walk through the ruins, we’ll visit its most important pyramids, primarily the well-preserved north pyramid. From the top of the structure, we’ll have fantastic views of the nearby Lurin Valley and the Pacific Ocean. From here, you can also see the large plazas the Incas built to receive the hundreds of pilgrims who worshipped Pachacamac.
We’ll also see the Acllahuasi temple or “house of Mamaconas”, the name given to a particular group of women sent from Cusco or other important cities to come and assist in the religious ceremonies and the production of fine textiles for nobility. On our way back to your hotel, we’ll make one last stop at the colorful, bohemian district of Barranco in the evening.
