Two days in Chivay and Colca Canyon Trek.
In the morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel and head northwest in to the shadows of great Mt Chachani. Along this route, we’ll pass through the wildlife-rich Pampa Cañahuas National Reserve where we’ll likely see wild vicuña, flamingos, ibises, Andean geese, ducks and Andean eagles (“Kara Kara”). Once we arrive in Chivay (3600 m), you’ll have the opportunity to spend your free afternoon relaxing at the hot springs & pools of La Calera. (Admission is about $ 6 per person).
Early this morning after breakfast, we’ll head up to explore the highest reaches of the canyon, passing through beautiful towns like Yanque & Maca, colonial churches and local people dressed in their typical, brightly-colored clothing. We’ll see hundreds of pre-Inca terraces still used to grow corn, quinoa, kiwicha and other traditional crops. We’ll keep heading upwards to finally reach the “Cruz del Condor” lookout point from which you’ll have jaw-dropping, panoramic views of the canyon, complete with the magic of Andean condors flying low overhead. After lunch, we’ll return to Arequipa, arriving back at your hotel by the evening.
We recommend bringing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for protection from the sun, a jacket for the cooler temperatures in the evening and comfortable walking shoes. Bring some local currency for any last-minute items you might pick up as well as for lunch. Of course, don’t forget your camera!
Experience two days of the most picturesque views in the southern highlands, where the hospitality of the local farming communities and natural beauty of the expansive landscape welcome you into this secluded region near Arequipa. Observe one of the deepest canyons in the world as the majestic Andean condors fly overhead.
