Explore from the southern coast of Peru to the Andes. In addition to frequent internal flights, Peru has an excellent bus network, and its trains can be one of the most impressive ways to navigate the Andes. In the Amazon, of course, the only way to do it is by boat. Don’t spread too much; Traveling is even more exhausting at altitude, and it is better to allow extra time on your itinerary in Peru to enjoy the surrounding towns and markets instead of simply visiting great places like Machu Picchu, the Colca Canyon or the floating islands.Peru is well placed to travel forward, since Lima is a regional flight center, so it can continue to Ecuador and Galapagos. Alternatively, cross the border into Bolivia on Lake Titicaca. See more of our main highlights of Peru on our interactive map, below.

We’ll take a short boat ride from Puno to the grouping of about 50 man-made islands on Lake Titicaca, where life happens on the water for their inhabitants. See how the residents of the Uros use the totora reed, an aquatic plant that grows in the lake, to build and maintain their islands, as well as for building family huts, cooking, and to bargain for other goods in the Puno markets. This civilization appeared over 3000 years ago and traditionally spoke the now-extinct Uro Puquina language; Today the population speaks Aymara. Among this island community, you’ll find a garden, primary school, medical center and church that serve the more than 1000 residents. You’ll also see the elaborately-woven, traditional reed boats used by the locals for fishing and transportation to the mainland and from island to island.

DAY 1: VISIT TO UROS FLOATING ISLANDS & AMANTANI COMMUNITY
Early this morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to head to the harbor. We’ll set out by boat and cross the waters of Lake Titicaca to the Uros Floating Islands, a small community that has lived on these reed islands for decades. See how the residents of the Uros use the totora reed, an aquatic plant that grows in the lake to build and maintain their islands, as well as for building family huts, cooking, and to bargain for products such as quinoa, potatoes, barley and wool. You’ll also see the elaborately-woven, traditional reed boats used by the locals for fishing and transportation to the mainland and from island to island. Take some time to explore some of these islands on-foot.
Afterwards, we’ll continue by boat towards “Amantani Island”. Enjoy the warm welcome from the locals as we pull into the harbor, where you’ll meet your host family. This afternoon, we’ll walk up to the highest point of the island to a mountain called “Pachamama” by the locals and check out some ancient ruins. Enjoy the view of Lake Titicaca from this perfect vantage point as the sun sets for the evening. Soon after nightfall, we head back down to the main plaza where our host families will invite us to dinner in their home. After your meal, head out “on-the-town” to tonight’s main event: a party hosted by the locals at the folkloric saloon, complete with a local band. Before you go, your hosts will help you get all dressed up in traditional clothing. Once the night winds down, you’ll head back to your host’s home for a good night’s rest.
